The Substance
Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the tyranny of female beauty and the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features the talented actress as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from covering world issues to embark on an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy guests. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship one night and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Available now, Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities in this clever ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems sensing the poltergeist, and it seems protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. This Creepy Thriller
The director's locked-room horror stands strong even without a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the local kids on edge. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals begin monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, yet the lead actress manages to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4
